Bognor Regis Regeneration Board

Regeneration Board Announces new Chair

The Board is pleased to announce that at its July meeting Raof Daud was appointed as its new Chair. Raof has served as Vice Chair for the last seven years. His appointment recognizes the importance of continuity in the Board’s leadership and the role of the private sector in the regeneration of Bognor Regis.

Raof led the team at Sime Darby that was responsible for successfully converting the 300,000 sq ft New Era Estate at Oldlands Way, Bognor Regis into an office/logistics facility which became J. Wiley & Sons’ European Distribution Hub. He also led the successful regeneration of the Lec A29 gateway site to Bognor Regis with the development of the Sainsbury’s supermarket in 2012 and subsequently in 2016, the opening of Wickes and the Marston’s Charlie Purley pub/restaurant. He is currently CEO of Dicentra Developments, a family-owned commercial property development company.

The position of Vice Chairman has been taken by Cllr Francis Oppler, Deputy Leader of Arun District Council and a West Sussex County Councillor since 2005.

Raof Daud said: ‘I would like to pay tribute to my predecessor Cllr Gill Brown who served as Chair of the Board during a time when Bognor Regis underwent huge regeneration. This include bringing Rolls Royce to Oldlands Farm, Sainsbury’s to the former Lec site, the new Ocean, Wave and Shoreline hotels at Butlin’s Resort, the new Engineering and Digital Technology Centre at the University of Chichester’s Bognor Regis Campus, the new Regis School and creating the Enterprise @ Bognor Regis Strategic Vision covering the Oldlands Farm, Saltbox, Rowan Way and Lec Airfield sites. The contribution from Gill, the team at Arun District Council and members of the Board has had a lasting positive impact on Bognor Regis, bringing hundreds of millions of Pounds of inward investment, related jobs and skills development. This demonstrates the success of the Board’s unique public private partnership approach.’

Raof continued: ‘I would like to welcome Cllr Francis Oppler and thank the Board’s members for demonstrating their confidence in appointing us as Chair and Vice Chair respectively. The Board brings together key stakeholders and investors so that the town can benefit from coordinated regeneration. It will be a tough act to fill Gill’s shoes but I look forward to the Board continuing to work closely with the new Arun District Council administration as well as the Bognor Regis Town Council and local parish councils in meeting the Board’s objective to ensure that Bognor Regis is a great place to live, work, visit and invest.’

David Myers, Advisor to the Board said: ‘It is pleasing that the Board has been able to appoint an experienced regeneration professional as Chairman. The Board is keen that the new administration at Arun District Council comes forward as soon as possible with their policies and proposals to regenerate the two key town centre sites at Hothampton car park and the Regis Centre’
