What We Do

Our purpose

We believe that the regeneration of a place is about more than bricks and mortar and that when developed using joined-up thinking and a shared vision, projects can achieve much greater cumulative impact and promote community involvement, regardless of their individual scale. The Board’s role allows us to bring local partners together to develop that shared vision and to monitor investment and progress and assess where the opportunities still lie. We do our research, utilising all the available data, including local consultation responses and statistics, to check that proposals are based on evidence and meet demand. We work with our members, partners and other stakeholders to identify shared priorities for the town and seek to facilitate the initiation or enrichment of proposals which deliver against these, ensuring that improvements meet the needs of Bognor Regis residents, both now and in the future. And we scrutinise any proposals which then come forward using our regeneration framework, pushing where necessary to ensure that Bognor Regis benefits from ambitious and innovative enhancements which will sustain our local environment, economy and community.

Between 2007 and 2020, well over £500 million has been invested in Bognor Regis and the surrounding area through the private, public and third sectors. Areas of investment include:

  • Housing

  • Education

  • Leisure, hospitality and entertainment

  • Creative Digital Economy

  • Logistics and distribution

  • Local road network

  • Edge of town retail parks

To read more about these investment areas click on the links to the case studies shown below. These links will connect you with the Bognor Regis Regeneration website which is run by our member, Arun District Council and gives a comprehensive overview of past, current and future activities and investment. It’s a great source way to keep up to date with what’s happening in the town.

Analysis shows that the ratio of town centre investments versus the wider Bognor Regis area stood at 1:4 in 2019. As a result of this disparity, the Board resolved to focus on town centre improvement and regeneration as a new objective. We host the Town Centre Forum, an informal discussion group of key town centre stakeholders, which works collaboratively to bring forward projects and proposals which meet the shared priorities. In addition to the priorities which are specific to Bognor Regis, the themes of social inclusion, community wellbeing, the environment and the vibrancy of town centres, have all been highlighted as national priorities post-Covid. The Board supports these priorities and through our own objectives, vision and values, will focus on supporting the delivery of these at a local level.

Shared values

The Board supports and promotes the shared town values, which were developed through public consultation by a partnership between the University of Chichester, West Sussex County Council and Arun District Council. These values seek to promote a positive narrative for the town, building confidence, ambition and pride in place. We encourage our members and the wider community to adopt the values and make their own contribution to the story of Bognor Regis.

The Regeneration Framework

We summarise the shared values in the terms AMBITION, INNOVATION and ENJOYMENT. In promoting them and applying them to our own organisation, we realised the need to develop a clear and consistent framework to assess projects and initiatives which come forward in Bognor Regis. Using the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals as a starting point, we have agreed six basic principles of regeneration.  We also support the global movement to replenish, redevelop and rebuild to a higher, greener standard – known as Build Back Better. This approach, used in tandem with our principles and the shared town values provide our ‘regeneration framework’.
